Name that veg!

I got in from work today (early, ha, cos I'd had to go to Wakefield for a meeting and it finished early!!) to find my first veggie box delivery from Woodlands Farm had arrived:

This is a basic veg box (if this is basic what on earth is a bigger one like?!), a fruit bag and half dozen free range eggs. Now all I need to do is decide what to cook. I think I've managed to identify most things, but I'm a bit stumped by the yellow thing in the bottom right corner (below the bananas). What on earth is it? If anyone knows please leave a comment. Recipe suggestions also welcome!

The cauliflower confused me at first, as I'd never seen a purple one before, but according to my Delia book it's Cape Broccoli. It also matches Lavender & Lace perfectly!

well, that's a new one - color coordinating your vegetables and your knitting!! Why didn't I ever think of that!

Yup, a squash - or type of pumpkin if you prefer. I've found Jane Grigson's 'Vegetable Book' absolutely invaluable in first, helping me identify what arrives in my veg box; and second, in helping me to overcome the oh no, not swede again syndrome!

It's a patty pan squash, (but probably has lots of other names)treat it like a courgette... I've got some huge white ones down the bottom of the garden ;-)

I love the box scheme - a surprise every week! Doesn't take much to please me :-) Not had this type of squash, but with butternut squash and other types I roast them in the oven with a bit of olive oil and cumin seeds (cut them into chunks and spread over a baking tray). You can then either eat them as is, or puree them to make a delicious soup (add cream if feeling very naughty!).

Yeah, its a squash but then you know that now! Thats loads for a basic box!! There is a new veggie delivery place opened up near my parents and I am thinking that we will have to try it although i do believe that Woodlands one comes this far north too.
Enjoy your veggies.

What a fantastic idea - I'd love a veg box! Think your strange thing might be a squash? Never seen a purple cauliflower before, very pretty!

Yes, as others have already pointed out, it does look like a patty pan pumpkin. I grew those in my garden last summer (really fun, because they grow so quickly) and the taste of them is very much like that of a courgette, although the flesh stays more firm when fried, and you can prepare it in much the same way too: fry it in olive oil with some garlic, pepper and salt.

I've just been looking at the Wooodlands site and they seem to be very good value. Something for us to consider I think :)

That's really funny that your cauli matches your knitting!

Definitely a patty pan squash. You can see photos of them in Google images. There are dozens of free recipes online, plus all the great ideas you got here. I like the idea of having veggies delivered every week, a surprise in each package.
